A fascinating vintage photographic postcard showing the famous donkey wheel at Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight. The postcard depicts a donkey standing inside the historic wheel used to raise water from the castle well.
Carisbrooke Castle's donkey wheel is located in the Well House and dates back to the 16th century. For hundreds of years, donkeys have been used to operate the tread wheel and draw water from the well, making this one of the castle's most unusual and recognisable features.
This unusual postcard would appeal to collectors of Isle of Wight memorabilia, historic castles, architectural postcards, animals and rural or social history.
